A creature born on a forum

The Ningen is not an ancient Japanese tradition. It appeared on anonymous Japanese forums in the mid-2000s, where research-ship crews allegedly saw an enormous white human-like shape near Antarctica. Retellings added arms, legs or fins without producing a verifiable report.

From anonymous claim to viral image

Paranormal magazines, compressed videos and alleged satellite captures gave the story a body. In dark water without scale, a pale whale, a cetacean underside or submerged ice can appear enormous. Many attributed images lack origin, date, original file or chain of custody.

Whales, ice and polar pareidolia

Belugas, humpbacks, elephant seals, submerged ice and pressure ridges create rounded or vaguely human forms. Distance and low contrast let pareidolia complete the figure. Without biological evidence or documented observation, Ningen is strongest as an example of internet-born folklore.
