Two stories beneath one bridge
The legend often begins in 1955 with a driver who allegedly saw upright frog-like figures, but surviving versions changed and documentation is late. Its better-known core came in March 1972, when officer Ray Shockey reported a small creature crossing the road and leaping toward the Little Miami River. Weeks later another officer shot at a similar animal.
The iguana and encounter memory
The second officer later said the animal was probably a large tailless iguana. That does not prove both men saw the same thing, but offers a realistic mechanism: poor light, an animal out of context and a posture that briefly seems human. Comparing reports with later pictures shows how the creature grew from local incident to legend.
From night creature to Ohio symbol
Loveland adopted Frogman as a friendly figure tied to its river, parks and tourism. HB 821 was introduced in 2026 to name it Ohio’s official state cryptid. As of August 25, 2026, it had been referred to the House Government Oversight Committee but had not been reported or passed. The case shows a community choosing to preserve its own monster.
