The night of the home camera
The case began with home-security footage circulated in 2007. Two pale forms cross a Fresno yard like long legs joined by a tiny upper mass, with no visible head or arms. What survives is footage recorded from the CCTV monitor, not the camera’s direct file; the original was lost, sharply limiting technical analysis.

Analysing a copy of a copy
Low resolution, interlacing, night noise and compression erase edges and proportions. Without reliable distance, height is uncertain. Birds, deer, a partly hidden person, suspended cloth and articulated puppets have been proposed. Reconstructions show the motion can be imitated, but do not prove how the first video was made.

From Fresno to internet creature
Later Yosemite-style clips expanded the legend but must be assessed separately because they share no source file, camera or custody chain. Television, social media and art gave eyes and personality to a silhouette absent from the original footage. Claims of Indigenous origins also appeared later online and are undocumented.
